The Fechtgesellschaft Basel ( Société d'Escrime de Bâle ) is a successful Swiss fencing club from Basel . It is the fencing club in Switzerland with the largest number of members (as of 2005)
The Fechtgesellschaft Basel is a member of IG Fechten Basel , the Swiss Fencing Association and the Federation International d'Escrime . The club was founded in 1889. In the course of its history, the FGB has become the most successful club in Swiss fencing history. Manfred Beckmann has been the club's coach since 1989. The fencing hall of the FGB on Theaterstrasse has seven fully equipped fencing lanes (detector systems, metal plate slope) on a sprung floor. 95 percent of the fencers are epee fencers , the rest are foil fencers . Saber fencers are the exception. Until the announcement of his resignation from professional sport, the Olympic champion Marcel Fischer belonged to the fencing company Basel. The young talent Max Heinzer is one of the most successful active members .
