Frascati is a municipality in the metropolitan city of Rome in the Italian region of Lazio with 22,886 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 21 kilometers southeast of Rome . It is the seat of the suburbicarian diocese of Frascati .
geography
Frascati is located in the Alban Mountains and belongs to the municipalities of the Castelli Romani . It is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Castelli Romani e Prenestini .
The municipality consists of the following fractions : Cisternole , Cocciano , Pantano Secco , Prataporci , Villa Muti , Selvotta , Vermicino .
history
Since ancient Roman were here patrician - villas built; Frascati was particularly popular as a summer residence for the Romans. Nearby are the ruins of the Roman villa town of Tusculum .
The buildings, mostly from the 16th and 17th centuries, which house valuable art treasures (including frescoes ) are worth seeing . The most famous is the Villa Aldobrandini , which was built from 1598 to 1603 by Giacomo della Porta (completed by C. Maderna) for Pope Clement VIII from the house of Aldobrandini. In addition, one should have seen the Villa Falconieri and the Villa Mondragone .
On September 8, 1943, 130 US long-range bombers attacked the city. There were at least 1,000 civilian casualties and 100 dead from Field Marshal Albert Kesselring's headquarters in Frascati.
On July 15, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI read a mass in Piazza San Pietro . He accepted an invitation from Bishop Raffaello Martinelli .
Today the place is popular with tourists and locals because of the proximity of Rome, but also because of the beauty of the landscape, the wine (which is exported all over the world; especially the white wine, which is described in the main article Frascati (wine) ) and very popular for healthy air.

Economy and Transport
Viticulture, among other things, is of economic importance in Frascati . The most important and best known wine is the DOC wine Frascati Bianco . Furthermore, two wines with a “controlled and guaranteed designation of origin ” ( Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG)) come from this growing area - namely the Cannellino di Frascati and the Frascati Superiore .
In terms of rail traffic, Frascati is connected via the Rome – Frascati railway line. This route was the first standing in that time under the rule of the Pope Papal States . It opened on June 14, 1856 and began in Rome at a train station at Porta Maggiore , from where it winds its way up the mountains. The route is now served by regional trains that start at Roma Termini station and stop only twice along the way.
Science and Research
Frascati is the European Space Research Institute (- ESRIN European Space Research Institute Engl.) Of the ESA . This is the center for earth observation missions (e.g. ENVISAT , ERS-1, ERS-2 ). The city is also home to the nuclear research center INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) , the Society for New Technologies, Energy and Environment ENEA (Ente per le Nuove tecnologie, l'Energia e l'Ambiente) and institutes of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche .
Others
In 2002, Andrew Blake's film The Villa was shot in Frascati . The Villa Falconieri in Frascati served as the backdrop for the Italian telenovela Elisa di Rivombrosa .
