Castelli Romani
The area of 16 municipalities in the Italian region of Lazio is referred to as Castelli Romani (in Rome only the name Castelli is used ) . The municipalities are located 20 to 53 km from Rome and are all in or on the Alban Hills .
The term Castelli Romani (German for example: Roman castles) is derived from the castles, but above all the numerous villas, that nobles and wealthy citizens of Rome have built in this area since ancient times. The name Castelli Romani is mainly used today for the tourist marketing of the region, which has been Rome's recreational area for over 2500 years.
The Castelli Romani are not an administrative association, such as the Comunità Montana dei Castelli Romani e Prenestini , which, however, is not congruent with the Castelli Romani.
The Natural Park of the Castelli Romani ( Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani ) with its seat in Rocca di Papa covers the core area of the territory with 12,000 hectares.
