Santa Maria di Grottaferrata Abbey

history

In 1004 Nilus von Rossano , a Greek monk, was given a former Roman villa in his domain by Theophylact II of Tusculum . A Christian oratory , the so-called Crypta Ferrata (iron-studded grotto), from which the name Grottaferrata is derived , has been located in the villa since the 5th century . Nilus and his successor Bartholomäus built the monastery of Santa Maria di Grottaferrata in the ruins . After the separation of the eastern and western churches, this remained (until today) with the Byzantine rite, but was still subordinate to the Roman Pope.

1487–1491 had the abbot Giuliano della Rovere expand the monastery complex of Giuliano da Sangallo and Baccio Pontelli like a fortress.
