history

The oldest structural evidence is the Cyclops walls in Via Ara de 'Santi, which were built by the Aequern to defend against the Romans and are related to similar fortifications in Bellegra and Roiate. With the final defeat of the Aequer in 304 BC. Chr. Was incorporated the area into the Roman Republic. Numerous archaeological finds prove the continued settlement of the area without written reports about a settlement.

After the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire, the municipality came to the territory of the Subiaco Abbey . The first written mention as feudum Castro Olibani dates from 958, when Pope John XII. the Benedictine abbey confirmed ownership.

In the 13th century, the Colonna acquired the place, which they sold to Scipione Caffarelli Borghese in 1614 . In 1849 Giuseppe Garibaldi briefly conquered Olevano, which in 1870 became part of the Kingdom of Italy .

In the 19th century, Olevano was the target of numerous painters from Northern Europe, especially the so-called German Romans around Joseph Anton Koch . The German art historian Karl Friedrich von Rumohr owned a villa in Olevano Romano in the 1820s, the view of which was captured in a watercolor by the German painter Friedrich von Nerly in 1824

Friedrich Preller the Elder - The Serpentara at Olevano

The Serpentara oak forest, located near Olevano, was a sacred oak grove that was particularly worthy of protection for the German Romans. The planned deforestation in 1873 was prevented by a joint action by art lovers and painters by buying the forest for the benefit of the German Empire and the German Emperor. A quarter of the costs were taken over by the painter Carl Schuch . Today the Akademie der Künste Berlin maintains the Villa Serpentara for its scholarship holders. A second scholarship holder is the Casa Baldi , which belongs to the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo .
