Surname

Originally the municipality was called Ponza, supposedly after a Roman gens Pontia, which is said to have originated from the place. After the Italian unification, the municipality was changed to Ponza d'Arcinazzo in 1872 to avoid confusion with the island of the same name . In 1891 the name was finally changed to Arcinazzo Romano. Legend has it that it is derived from Arcinia, a concubine of Emperor Claudius , who owned a villa here. The large Roman country villa uncovered in the municipality is assigned to Emperor Traian .
