Piglio is an Italian commune in the province of Frosinone in the Lazio region with 4530 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 63 km east of Rome and 38 km northwest of Frosinone .

geography

Piglio lies on a foothill of Monte Scalambra in a panoramic position between the valleys of the Sacco and the Aniene . It is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Ernici .

The neighboring municipalities are Acuto , Anagni , Arcinazzo Romano , Fiuggi , Paliano , Serrone and Trevi nel Lazio .

history

Piglio was a settlement of Hernici , with the possibly capitulum Hernicum was identical, from the Strabo reported. The place was first mentioned in 1088 as Castrum Pileum . In the 11th century it belonged to the Bishops of Anagni. In 1347 Cola di Rienzo appropriated the place. After his fall he came to the Colonna .

Nazzareno Gabrieli was elected mayor in June 2004. On May 25, 2014 Mario Felli became the new mayor.

Culinary specialties

Piglio is the center of the production area for the red wine Cesanese del Piglio , currently the only DOCG wine in Lazio.
