Veroli is an Italian city ​​in the province of Frosinone in the Lazio region with 20,395 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is 93 km east of Rome and 13 km northeast of Frosinone .

geography

The old town of Veroli with around 3,500 inhabitants is located on a ridge between the Sacco and Liri valleys . The municipality extends from the Ciociaria hill country to the Monti Ernici, where it has its highest point with the Monte del Passeggio (2066 m). Veroli is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Ernici . Most of the residents live in the valley between the old town and Casamari in the districts along Strada Statale 214.

history

The ancient Verŭlae was since the 8th century BC. An important city of hernias . It was closely linked to Rome and soon became part of the emerging Roman Empire . The ancient city of Cereatae was located in the area of ​​today's municipality .

A Christian community has been recorded since the 4th century and Veroli became a bishopric in 743 . In 877 it was sacked by the Saracens .

In the dispute between Gregory IX. and Friedrich II. Veroli took the side of the Pope and remained closely connected with the Vatican afterwards . In 1350 the city was badly damaged by an earthquake.

In the 16th century, Veroli was conquered by the Spaniards, allied with the Colonna . But after that the links with the Pope were renewed and the city was ruled by cardinals . In 1870 the city came with the Papal States to the Kingdom of Italy and in 1927 to the newly founded province of Frosinone.

Giuseppe D'Onorio ( center-left alliance ) was elected mayor in June 2004 and confirmed in office in 2009. His center-left alliance also has the majority in the municipal council with 14 out of 20 seats. Simone Cretaro (PSI) has been the new mayor since the local elections on May 24, 2014.

The historic old town is divided into three parts. San Leucio extends in the north to the rock of the same name. The middle part of the city around the cathedral has many aristocratic palaces. The lower district of Santa Croce is characterized by its steep, narrow streets.

  • The 12th century Cathedral of Sant'Andrea was built over the main temple of Verulae. Among the numerous church treasures are a silver reliquary from 1291 with a piece of the Holy Cross and a silver bust from the 13th century containing the head of Saint Salome . Until 1861 the so-called Veroli box was kept in the cathedral .
  • The Museo delle Erbe (herbal museum) shows 850 plants, mainly from the Monti Ernici.
  • A few kilometers east of the old town is the important Cistercian monastery Casamari , which was built over the ruins of the ancient city of Cereatae.
