In the winding old town, the remains of the medieval castle and the city fortifications with their city gates can still be seen.

  • The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta was built over a previous building until 1177. Stylistically, it is closely related to the nearby monastery church of Fossanova .
  • The pilgrimage church of Santa Maria dell'Auricola was built over an ancient temple of Hercules. It was fundamentally renewed at the end of the 19th century. However, there are still frescoes from the 14th to 16th centuries.

Blood miracle

In the church of Santa Maria Assunta the blood of the martyr Lawrence of Rome is kept as a relic in a glass vial . Every year, shortly before the day of his martyrdom, on August 10th, the dried blood liquefies for a short time. The relic was first mentioned on the occasion of the consecration of the church in 1177. However, the first liquefaction is not documented until the tenure of Pope Paul V , at the beginning of the 17th century. In 1759 the blood miracle was created by Clemens XIII. officially confirmed.
