Ceprano is a town in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region of Lazio with 8,756 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is 101 km southeast of Rome and 21 km southeast of Frosinone .

Ceprano lies in a loop of the Liri .

The neighboring towns are: Arce , Castro dei Volsci , Falvaterra , Pofi , Ripi , San Giovanni Incarico , Strangolagalli .

history

The Fregellanum road station was built in antiquity at the junction of the Via Latina over the Liri . After the destruction of the nearby Fregellae in 125 BC. Numerous displaced residents settled in Fregellanum.

Under the name Ceparanium , the place retained its importance even in the Middle Ages. 1059 belehnte Pope Nicholas II. Here Robert Guiscard with Apulia . During the Second World War , after the close regional battle for Monte Cassino in 1944, when the Allies advanced, heavy fighting with the Wehrmacht also broke out in Ceprano, which led to the almost complete destruction of the place.

In 1994 the cranium of a representative of the genus Homo was found in Ceprano , which was called Homo cepranensis and is presumably to be assigned to Homo erectus / Homo heidelbergensis .
