history

San Giorgio a Liri is a founding of Montecassino Abbey from the late 10th century that was home to a small community of monks. Until 1806 the place belonged to the Terra di San Benedetto, which underlines the naming after a saint. Directly incorporated into the Kingdom of Naples, San Giorgio became part of the Italian nation-state in 1861 and shortly thereafter received the valid additional designation after the Liri River to distinguish it from other places with the same name in Italy. During the Second World War , the place was almost completely destroyed by British and American bombers because it was in the main zone of the Gustav Line , a line of defense of the German Wehrmacht against the Allies . In contrast to other settlements in the area, its population did not decline afterwards, but gradually recovered, as the proximity to the town of Cassino offers job opportunities due to the settlement of industrial companies there. The appearance of San Giorgio today is almost completely modern.

Attractions

  • The parish church of San Giorgio Maggiore in the center on Corso Achille Spatuzzi is a classicist building from the early 19th century. The facade next to the bell tower on the left is in a neighbourhood style and does not have any special decorative elements. The single-nave interior impresses with its colored design, which sets off the architectural elements within the relatively simple overall appearance. The apse area with its five-eighth shape is a specialty. The only ornament here is an elongated crucifix.
  • The Palazzo Morra, which has a two-wing structure and only two storeys with simple window shapes, adjoins the church on the main street. Towards the street, modern shops disturb the impression that the Guelfenzinnen , which cannot be originally documented towards the church, loosen up.

regional customs

Every year on August 16 there is a big festival in favor of the patron saint San Rocco.
