Sant'Andrea del Garigliano is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region of Lazio with 1393 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is 144 km southeast of Rome , 66 km southeast of Frosinone and 87 km northwest of Naples .
geography
Sant'Andrea del Garigliano is located in the Monti Aurunci at the foot of Monte Maio (940 m). The municipality extends to the Garigliano river , which forms the border with Campania here.
Sant'Andrea is a member of the Comunità Montana L'Arco degli Aurunci .
The neighboring towns are Castelforte ( LT ), Rocca d'Evandro ( CE ), Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano , Sant'Apollinare and Vallemaio .
history
The municipality of Sant'Andrea was originally settled by the Oscars and was founded in the 4th century BC. Conquered by the Romans. The place itself goes back to a church of Sant'Andrea, which was built by monks from Montecassino and was destroyed by the Saracens in 846 . It was then rebuilt and the center of a settlement. Around 1045 Abbot Richerio had a castle built, which became part of the County of Gaeta in 1107 .
In 1861 Sant'Andrea became part of the Terra del Lavoro province of the Kingdom of Italy , until the newly founded province of Frosinone came into being in 1927. During the Second World War, Sant'Andrea suffered severe damage during the battle for the Gustav Line .
