Attractions

The old town center still shows its medieval appearance. In 2003 a tour of the place was inaugurated.

  • In 1592–1596 the castle was converted into the parish church of Santi Giovanni , so that it still retains its peculiar castle-like appearance.

Santuario di San Gerardo

In 1102 an English pilgrim named Gerard, who died here on the way to the Holy Land , was buried near Gallinaro. A few years later, a sick pilgrim at the grave of St. Gerard saw him in a vision and was healed afterwards. As a result, a lively pilgrimage developed and a place of pilgrimage, the Santuario di San Gerardo , first mentioned in 1259, was built, which was constantly expanded thanks to generous donations.

Nuova Gerusalemme

In the spring of 1947, shortly before her first communion, little Giuseppina Norcia had a vision in which she saw the baby Jesus sleeping on a cloud. This vision was repeated on May 15, 1974, when, according to Giuseppina, the Virgin Mary and the Archangel Michael appeared and asked her to build a cradle for the baby Jesus. Then a chapel was built on the site of the vision, commonly known as Nuova Gerusalemme ( New Jerusalem ). It is the destination of thousands of pilgrims every year . On June 5, 2016, the membership of the Universal Christian Church of New Jerusalem was excommunicated by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith ; it is a schismatic sect .
