history

The inhabitants of 124 BC Fregellae , destroyed by the Romans, founded the town of Fabrateria Nova in the Cività district of today's municipality of San Giovanni Incarico . When it was destroyed by the Lombards in 580 AD , the inhabitants moved to the more easily defended hills of the area, including the site of today's San Giovanni Incarico. Its first mention, still with the name Carica , comes from the year 977. In 1053 the name San Giovanni appeared for the first time .

Subsequently, the place belonged to the Abbey of Montecassino , which founded the daughter monastery of San Maurizio below San Giovanni Incarico. From the late Middle Ages onwards, the Spinelli di Giovinazzo, Della Rovere and Farnese families owned the town until 1731, when it was finally incorporated into the Kingdom of Naples , which was followed by the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 . Like all other municipalities in the wider area, it suffered considerable damage between autumn 1943 and spring 1944 during the battle for the Gustav Line , which was gradually repaired.
