Lelio Orci
Lelio Orci (* 22. March 1937 in San Giovanni Incarico , province of Frosinone , † 22. October 2019 in Geneva ) was an Italian physician for diabetology .
Orci studied medicine at the University of Rome ( Laurea 1964) and in 1966 went to the University of Geneva to study with Albert Renold . In 1976 he became director of the histology department there. There he was a professor of histology and cell biology. Orci examined in particular the structure and function of the Langerhans Islands .
He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences (1998), the Accademia dei Lincei (2005), the Royal Belgian Academy of Sciences , the Academie Suisse des Sciences Medicales, the Istituto Lombardo, the Italian Academy of Sciences (Accademia di Scienze e Lettere in Italia) and the Academia Europaea . He was an honorary doctor of the University of Geneva (2008).
In 1973 he was awarded the Oskar Minkowski Prize of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes . In addition, he received the Banting Medal of the American Diabetes Association in 1981 , the Dale Medal in 1983, the Otto Naegeli Prize in 1986 and the König Faisal Prize for Medicine.
From 2009 he was an honorary foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
