Isola del Liri is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region of Lazio with 11,187 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 104 km east of Rome and 23 km east of Frosinone .
geography
The old town of Isola del Liri is located on an island between two arms of the Liri River . The two natural waterfalls that form the eponymous island on which the Castello stands at the top of the separation of the two arms are famous as a natural spectacle. There are the smaller Cascata del Valcatoio in the north and the Cascata Grande in the east, each around 30 meters high; they are followed by the third, the Cascata dell'Anitrella. Romantic paintings depict the old location with both waterfalls as a popular motif. Modern districts are Capitino, Carnello, San Domenico and Selva.
Isola del Liri is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle del Liri .
history
Isola del Liri was a settlement of the Volscians in pre-Roman times , of which a necropolis was partially exposed. She came with Arpino and Sora in 305 BC. Under Roman rule. In 1010, in a document from Gastalden Petrus Ratchis, the place was named as insula filiorum Petri and belonged to the Principato di Capua . For the year 1100 Pope Paschal II named a castellum insulae in Isola di Sora. The enumeration of the fiefdoms of the Kingdom of Sicily from 1187 mentions two knights from here: The older named Roffredo was the owner of Isola and Castelliri. At that time part of the county of Sora, Isola followed its history including the change of ownership.
Since the late 16th century, the Boncompagni family had factories built for the production of metal objects, cloth, silk and paper, which were powered by the water power of the Liri. On May 12, 1799, French soldiers carried out a massacre after a revolt by the local population, which killed around 600 people. Under French rule, the paper industry was expanded by Count Charles Lefêbvre di Pontarlier between 1806 and 1815. In 1861 Isola del Liri became part of the Kingdom of Italy , and in 1869 the current city name was established. In 1927, Isola came from the province of Terra del Lavoro in the Campania region to the newly founded province of Frosinone in the Lazio region . The position of the place in the combat zone of the Second World War caused an economic decline; a first Allied air raid took place on October 23, 1943. Former industrial buildings have meanwhile been used for other purposes, namely a museum of paper production and an Ozeaneum. In spring 2004 the Parco Fluviale del Liri was established. Various attempts to merge the communities around Sora have so far been unsuccessful.
Attractions
- Collegiata S. Lorenzo below the castle. It has a red-washed facade with a colossal order of four Corinthian pilasters. The large portal contains an inscription panel framed by volutes, which states that the construction was completed in 1727.
- Castello Boncompagni with a square keep and an irregular inner courtyard. The outwardly simple building served as the residence of the Dukes of Sora, whose first, Giacomo Boncompagni (1548–1612), son of Pope Gregory XIII. (1572–1585), was enfeoffed with the duchy of King Philip II of Spain in 1579. A portrait of the painter Scipione Pulzoni from Gaeta shows him in splendid armor with armor, helmet and gloves and the command staff of the Gonfaloniere della Santa Chiesa Romana, the commander-in-chief of the papal troops. The building was set on fire in 1799 and then used as a fabric factory; hence the unassuming exterior shape. In 1924 it was bought by the Viscogliosi family who still own it. Towards the river in the north behind a bridge there is a wide gate with a martial design. The inner courtyard is partially unfinished because a planned arcade courtyard was not completed. There are two Boncompagni coats of arms in the stairwell. The large ballroom is particularly splendid with grotto frescoes of biblical scenes in the upper part of the walls. The coffered wooden ceiling, divided into individual sections by crossbars, also shows the sophisticated artistic design. Behind the building, the park extends with a dense flora. Nowadays the Castello is a place for festive events. The building complex and the waterfalls form a unique landscape ensemble.
- Villa Lefêbvre in the style of the French Renaissance as evidence of the temporary French rule during the Napoleonic period with a park.
