Girolamo Boncompagni
Girolamo Boncompagni (also Girolamo Buoncompagni , born March 23, 1622 in Isola del Liri , † January 24, 1684 in Bologna ) was Archbishop of Bologna and Cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
Girolamo Boncompagni came from the noble family of the Dukes of Sora from Bologna. He was a great-nephew of Filippo Boncompagni, who was promoted to cardinal in 1572, and nephew of Cardinal Francesco Boncompagni . He later became the uncle of Cardinal Giacomo Boncompagni , also Archbishop of Bologna. He received his first education from his uncle, Cardinal Francesco Boncompagni, Archbishop of Naples . He received his doctorate as Doctor iuris utriusque . In 1642 he went to Rome and there entered the Curia in 1647 . Among other things, he was a trainee lawyer at the Court of Justice of the Apostolic Signature . On October 2, 1648 he became secretary of the Congregation for Rites .
On December 11, 1651, although he had not yet received his ordination and had not reached the canonical age of 30, he was elected Archbishop of Bologna with papal dispensation . He was ordained bishop on February 4, 1652 by Cardinal Niccolò Albergati-Ludovisi ; Co- consecrators were Ranuzio Scotti , formerly Bishop of Borgo San Donnino , and Carlo Carafa , Bishop of Aversa . From June 8, 1660 to 1664, Girolamo Boncompagni was Prefect of the Apostolic Palace and Governor of Castelgandolfo .
Pope Alexander VII accepted him in the consistory of January 14, 1664 as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals and awarded him the cardinal's hat and the titular church of Santi Pietro e Marcellino on February 11 of the same year . Cardinal Boncompagni took part in the 1667 conclave that Pope Clement IX. chose. He later took part in the conclave of 1669/70 , from which Clement X emerged as Pope. He was also a participant in the 1676 conclave , the Innocent XI. elected to the Pope.
Cardinal Girolamo Boncompagni died on the evening of January 24, 1684 in Bologna and was buried in the Cathedral of Bologna ; his nephew, Cardinal Giacomo Boncompagni, was later buried at his side.
