Angelo Maria Ranuzzi
Angelo Maria Ranuzzi (born May 19, 1626 in Bologna , † September 27, 1689 in Fano ) was an Italian Roman Catholic clergyman, cardinal and archbishop of Bologna .
Life
Origin and early years
He came from a family of the Bolognese patriciate and was the second of three children of Senator Marcantonio Ranuzzi and his wife Orinzia Albergati. His great-nephew Vincenzo Ranuzzi also became a cardinal in 1785. Angelo Maria Ranuzzi studied at the University of Padua, where he received his doctorate iuris utriusque . Then he went on a trip through Europe to learn about the customs and traditions of other countries. He later moved to Rome and served the Curia as papal house prelate . Ranuzzi was appointed trainee lawyer at the courts of the Apostolic Signature and in 1661 was appointed governor of Rimini, subsequently also by Rieti, Camerino and Ancona. Pope Alexander VII appointed him vice- legate in Urbino and acting general of the papal troops.
On October 27, 1666, Pope Alexander VII appointed him Inquisitor and Apostolic Legate in Malta . He arrived in Malta on February 12, 1667 and stayed there until April 7, 1668. During his tenure, Angelo Maria Ranuzzi wrote a lengthy report on the Order of Malta and the island of Malta , in which he expressed his appreciation for the local population and also harsh criticism of the Inquisition did not hide.
Episcopal offices
On April 30, 1668 Angelo Maria Ranuzzi was appointed titular archbishop of Tamiathis and received the minor and sacramental ordinations in quick succession , up to the ordination of priests , the exact dates are not known. He was ordained bishop on June 24, 1668 in Rome by Cardinal Cesare Facchinetti ; Co- consecrators were Giacomo Altoviti , Latin (titular) Patriarch of Antioch , and Stefano Brancaccio , Apostolic Nuncio in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . On June 26, 1668 Angelo Maria Ranuzzi became papal assistant to the throne . From June 30, 1668 he was nuncio in Savoy and from 1671 in Poland. On November 20, 1675 he was appointed governor of the Marca Anconitana and on April 18, 1678 he became Bishop of Fano with the personal title of Archbishop . In 1683 he was sent to Paris to mediate between France and Austria with the aim of forming a strong alliance against the advance of the Ottomans . He was sent again to Paris in 1686 on a diplomatic mission from the Holy See .
cardinal
In the consistory of September 2, 1686 , Pope Innocent XI created. However, it never came to him to become a cardinal priest , to be awarded the cardinal hat and a title church . Angelo Maria Ranuzzi was appointed Archbishop of Bologna on May 17, 1688, but died in Fano in 1689 on the way to the Conclave . He was buried in the local cathedral . He left his extensive library to his nephew, Count Ranuzzi.
