Giacomo Boncompagni , also Giacomo Buoncompagni (born May 15, 1652 in Isola del Liri , † March 24, 1731 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman, Archbishop of Bologna and Cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He came from the family of the Dukes of Sora and was a great-nephew of the Archbishop of Naples Cardinal Francesco Boncompagni , nephew of the Archbishop of Bologna Cardinal Girolamo Boncompagni , and great-uncle of Cardinal Gregorio Salviati . He was also related to Cardinal Tommaso Ruffo . At a young age he became a Knight of the Sovereign Order of Malta . He went to Rome to pursue a spiritual career, studied at the University of La Sapienza and received his doctorate there on March 30, 1676, Doctor iuris utriusque . In 1676 he was governor of Orvieto; under the pontificate of Alexander VIII he was Vice-Governor of Fermo.

On April 17, 1690, Giacomo Boncompagni was appointed Archbishop of Bologna, dispensing with the fact that he had not yet received his ordination . On May 4, 1690 he became Papal Assistant to the Throne . He was ordained bishop on May 7th of the same year in the Roman church of San Marco by Cardinal Gasparo Carpegna .

Pope Innocent XII. created him in the consistory of December 12, 1695 , the first of this Pope, as cardinal priest . Giacomo Boncompagni received the cardinal's hat and Santa Maria in Via as the titular church on January 2, 1696. As legatus a latere he represented the Pope at the marriage of Emperor Joseph I with Wilhelmine Amalie von Braunschweig-Lüneburg . After the death of Innocent XII. Cardinal Boncompagni took part in the conclave of 1700 , from which Clement XI. emerged as Pope. He was also a participant in the 1721 conclave , which Pope Innocent XIII. elected, also the conclave 1724 , which in the election of Pope Benedict XIII. flowed. On June 12, 1724 he opted for the cardinals class of the cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian diocese of Albano , where he continued to hold the archbishopric of Bologna. Also at the 1730 conclave with the election of Pope Clement XII. Giacomo Boncompagni took part.

He died in the convent of the Theatines in Rome. He was buried in the Roman church of Sant'Andrea della Valle before his remains were transferred to the Cathedral of Bologna and buried at the side of his uncle Cardinal Girolamo Boncompagni.
