Election observers and speakers were in the conclave

Right from the start, the Zelanti party tried to enforce Cardinal Imperiali , but the French and Spanish rejected him. Cardinal Paolucci also failed as a candidate. Cardinal Annibale Albani now proposed the six cardinals Corsini, Spada , Piazza , Barbarigo , Bussi and Olivieri as candidates. Of them, he preferred Bussi and Olivieri.

When Cardinal Rohan arrived on April 12th, the rumor immediately spread that he should push through the election of Olivieri. There were also rumors that Olivieri had promised the King of France that after his election he would abrogate the bull Unigenitus Dei Filius and cede various Italian areas to Spain.

On April 25, Cardinal Polignac and the imperial ambassador, Count Kaunitz, arrived. He informed Cardinal Alvaro Cienfuegos that the choice of Cardinals Pamfili, Vallemani, Spada, Piazza, Corradini, Caracciolo, Tanara, Gozzadini, Orsini, Ruffo, Colonna, Davia, Boncompagni, Pico and Pignatelli was pleasant for the emperor.

Cardinal Cienfuegos now tried, supported by the French, to have Cardinal Piazza elected Pope. He had a block of 32 cardinals for this, so that he was only four votes short. But Cardinal Albani tried everything to prevent this election. For this he even started a rumor that Piazza was a Jansenist . The odds of piazzas decreased every day. In the election on May 23rd, Cardinal Orsini received 26 votes and in the election on May 24th 27 votes.

On the evening of May 28th, Cardinal Belluga Orsini announced his impending election, but the candidate was reluctant to vote. Finally, on the morning of May 29, Cardinals Albani, Tolomei, and Corradini managed to allay Orsini's concerns. When it came to the election in the Sistine Chapel , Cardinal Orsini won all votes.

Orsini took the Pope's name Benedict, but overlooked that Benedict XIII. had been one of the anti-popes and initially called himself Benedict XIV, until the error was cleared up and the ordinal number in XIII. was changed.
