Christian August von Sachsen-Zeitz (born October 9, 1666 at Moritzburg Castle in Zeitz ; † August 23, 1725 in Regensburg ) was Prince of Sachsen-Zeitz , Cardinal - Archbishop of Gran and Imperial Principal Commissioner.

Life

The son of Duke Moritz von Sachsen-Zeitz and Dorothea Maria von Sachsen-Weimar was a knight in the Teutonic Order , converted to Catholicism in 1693 and became canon and provost of Cologne in 1695 and also Bishop of Raab (Győr) in Hungary on June 18, 1696 . On January 24, 1701 he was coadjutor of the Archbishop of Gran (Esztergom) and by Pope Clement XI. cardinal on May 17, 1706. On January 20, 1707 he became Archbishop of Gran and thus the first primate of Hungary ( called Keresztély Ágost in Hungarian ). In 1714 he and his successors were elevated to the rank of imperial prince as Archbishops of Gran by the emperor . This allowed them to use the title of Prince Primate of Hungary . From 1716 Christian August held the office of Imperial Principal Commissioner at the Perpetual Reichstag in Regensburg and thus de facto presided over the Reichstag as the Emperor's deputy. He died here on August 23, 1725.

In order to become king of Poland, his relative Augustus the Strong had to convert to the Roman Catholic faith. Christian August secretly instructed him in this belief and on June 1, 1697, August secretly converted to the Roman Catholic faith in the Catholic court chapel in Baden near Vienna , then publicly and solemnly in Deutsch-Piekar (Upper Silesia) by taking the prescribed Apostolic Creed in front of his great cousin Christian August. Christian August issued a certificate about the conversion of August the Strong, which was certified by the papal Internuntius.

On the occasion of the victory over the Turks in Belgrade in 1717 , Christian August, representative of Charles VI. a splendid feast at the Reichstag, at the instigation of the emperor. A banquet was held on October 26th in the great hall of St. Emmeram .
