Giuseppe Sacripante (born March 16, 1642 or 1643 in Narni , † January 4, 1727 in Rome ; also listed as Sacripanti ) was an Italian clergyman and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Origin and life

Giuseppe Sacripante was born as the eldest of four children of Giacinto Sacripante and his wife Vittoria de Basilis. His younger brother Filippo Sacripante († April 1714) was the father of the later Cardinal Carlo Maria Sacripante (1689-1758).

He first studied literature in Rome and then law. First he worked at the Roman Rota , in 1684 he became consistorial advocate . He then held various offices in the Roman Curia . The date of his ordination is not known.

In the consistory of December 12, 1695 he was by Pope Innocent XII. created as a cardinal priest and was assigned the titular church of Santa Maria in Traspontina on January 2, 1696 . From January 2, 1696 to December 4, 1700, Giuseppe Sacripante was Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Council of Tridentine . He took part in the conclave of 1700 , which Clement XI. elected to the Pope. From December 9, 1704 until his death he was Prefect of the Congregation Propaganda Fide and from January 26, 1705 to January 25, 1706 Camerlengo of the College of Cardinals. On March 3, 1721, Santa Prassede became his titular church. Giuseppe Sacripante took part in the conclave of 1721 , the Innocent XIII. elected to the Pope, as well as in the conclave of 1724 , in which Benedict XII. was elected Pope. On July 31, 1726 he was assigned the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina and became a cardinal protopresbyter .

After his death he was buried in the second side chapel on the right - Cappella S. Giuseppe or Cappella Sacripante  - in the Roman church of Sant'Ignazio , which he had donated for this purpose and in honor of his patron saint Joseph in 1712.

In his hometown of Narni, he promoted the veneration of the blessed Lucia von Narni (Lucia Brocadelli, 1476–1544) and had the St. Catherine's Chapel of the San Giovenale Cathedral redesigned and rededicated in her honor as a family burial place. His nephew Cardinal Carlo Maria Sacripante was buried here.
