Galeazzo Marescotti
Galeazzo Marescotti (born October 1, 1627 in Vignanello , † July 3, 1726 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
Marescotti was born in Vignanello. His parents were Sforza Marescotti and Vittoria Ruspoli, both of whom came from noble families from Bologna and Modena . After studying in the seminary, Galeazzo was ordained a priest at the age of 23 on September 29, 1662 , he was called to the papal see and appointed apostolic protonotary .
From 1661 to 1663 he was governor of Ascoli Piceno . In 1663 he was appointed director of the Congregatio Inquisitori Sancti Officii and in 1665 made commissioner of the papal see under Alexander VII . In 1668 he was appointed titular archbishop of Corinthus . Clement IX sent him as ambassador to Vienna and then as nuncio to Poland . On 4 March 1668 he received by Pietro Vidoni , the Bishop of Lodi , with the collaboration of Giacomo de Angelis , Archbishop of Urbino , and Carlo de 'Vecchi , the former Bishop of Chiusi , the episcopal ordination .
Two years later, on August 13, 1670, he was appointed Nuncio in Spain and stayed in Madrid until 1675. On May 27 of the same year, Pope Clement X raised him to cardinal dignity in the consistory and then awarded him the titular church of San Bernardo alle Terme as cardinal priest . From 1676 to 1679 he was papal governor in Ferrara . In 1679 he was appointed Bishop of Tivoli . In the church of Tivoli he had walnut stalls built at his own expense and had the cathedral chapel decorated with colored marble and other ornaments. He also set up a synod for the clergy and donated 500 scudi to the cathedral, with the stipulation that an annual mass for his soul should be read. In 1684 he handed the diocese into the hands of Innocent XI. back. He always remained connected to the city. In 1705 he founded a monastery of the Elisabethinnen for the city , to which he donated his most beautiful furniture in 1721. In 1681 he received the title of Santi Quirico and Giuditta and was appointed Camerlengo in 1688 . In 1700 he received the title of Santa Prassede and in 1708 the title of San Lorenzo in Lucina . In 1717 he gave back all titles and lived another nine years until his death at the age of 99.
