The Archdiocese of Urbino-Urbania-Sant'Angelo in Vado was established in the 6th century as the Diocese of Urbino . On July 7th, 1563 the diocese of Urbino was raised to an archbishopric by Pope Pius IV with the Apostolic Constitution Super Universas . The dioceses of Cagli , Senigallia , Pesaro , Fossombrone , Montefeltro and Gubbio were subordinated to the Archdiocese of Urbino as suffragan dioceses . The seminary of the Archdiocese of Urbino was established on November 21, 1592.

Since May 23, 1977, the Archdiocese of Urbino and the Diocese of Urbania-Sant'Angelo in Vado were administered in personal union. On September 30, 1986 the Archdiocese of Urbino was annexed to the Archdiocese of Urbino by the Congregation for Bishops with the decree Instantibus votis, the Diocese of Urbania-Sant'Angelo in Vado. The Archdiocese of Urbino-Urbania-Sant'Angelo in Vado lost its metropolitan status on March 11, 2000 and was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Pesaro as a suffragan.
