The Cathedral of Urbino or the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption ( Italian Duomo di Urbino, Basilica Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta ) is a church in Urbino in the Italian region of Marche . The Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Urbino-Urbania-Sant'Angelo in Vado is responsible for the Assumption of Mary . It bears the title of a minor basilica and is part of the world cultural heritage of the old town of Urbino.

history

The first cathedral on this site was built around 1021, replacing another that stood outside the city wall. Under the patronage of Count Federico da Montefeltro , a renovation took place in the 15th century based on a design by Francesco di Giorgio Martini . Construction lasted until 1604. The west facade was completed in 1782 based on a design by Camillo Morigia made of Furlo stone. It was provided with five images depicting the three religious virtues (faith, hope and love), flanked by Augustine of Hippo on the left and John Chrysostom on the right.

After being damaged by the earthquake in 1781, the dome collapsed on January 12, 1789 after another strong earthquake and had to be rebuilt. This project was entrusted to Giuseppe Valadier and completed in 1801. The renovation was carried out in the classical style. The cathedral was opened in 1950 by Pope Pius XII. raised to the rank of a minor basilica.

architecture

The classical white interior of the three-aisled basilica is designed on a floor plan in the form of a Latin cross . It has a length of 64 meters and a width of 37 meters. The central nave is roofed with a barrel vault . The crossing of the transept carries a crossing dome with a tambour , the lantern of which rises to 50 meters, the vault is designed as a coffered ceiling .

Inside there are two paintings by Federico Barocci , Martyrdom of St. Sebastian in the north aisle and the Last Supper in the sacrament chapel. Other paintings include an Assumption of Mary by Carlo Maratta and a Birth by Carlo Cignani . The four evangelists are depicted on the pendentives of the dome. The most important altarpiece is by Christopher Unterberger and represents a Madonna among the patron saints of the city. The painting Relocation of the Holy House of Loreto is by Claudio Ridolfi. The humanist scholar and historian Polydor Virgil died in Urbino in 1555. He was born in this cathedral in the chapel of St. Andreas buried, which he donated himself. His grave was covered with a memorial stone in 1631 that read, "His fame will live on forever". It is believed that this stone was lost in the 1789 earthquake.
