Mario Alberizzi (also Alberici or Albrizzi ; born December 29, 1609 in Salice Salentino , † September 29, 1680 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal.

biography

He was born on December 29, 1609 in Salice Salentino, the son of Giovanni Alberizzi, Prince of Vetrana and Marchese of Salice and Giulia Farnese. He started his ecclesiastical career at a very young age, studied theology and then moved to Rome, where he became one of the collaborators of Pope Alexander VII . The latter appointed him advisor for the Apostolic Signature and in 1657 he became a canon of the Vatican Basilica . At the same time he became the secretary of the propaganda fideappointed. In this position he pursued the strategy of creating a missionary hierarchy in the east through a number of apostolic vicars in the missions in order to break the overwhelming power of the Portuguese and to promote French expansion in Asia. This policy was able to prevail after numerous conflicts. Also from 1657 he was governor of Ancona and in this capacity received the affection and gratitude of the population for his interventions during a terrible famine. On his return to Rome in 1664 he was appointed secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Religious .

On 19 January 1671 it appointed Pope Clement X to Titular Archbishop of Neocesarea del Ponto and sent him on 17 February of the same year as nuncio to Vienna . When he arrived in the Austrian capital in May, he joined Bishop Francesco Nerli for a time , who had traveled ahead of him in March to establish an anti-Turkish alliance between the Habsburg Empire and Poland . The league was one of the main objectives of the nunciature's diplomatic work. In any case, Alberizzi had many problems to contend with in this role, which made his job difficult. His position was hampered not only by the ministers, but also by the insecure and overly cautious nature of the emperor. These ecclesiastical difficulties included the contradictions between the Bishop of Brixen and the Chapter, as well as the Habsburgs' marriage policy. The planned wedding of Claudia Felizitas von Tirol , who later became the bride of Emperor Leopold I von Habsburg, with the then Duke of York was viewed positively by the Curia in order to rebalance European politics against the French overwhelming power.

When the French troops of Louis XIV invaded the Netherlands in 1672 and the war began, Alberizzi tried, as Pope Clement XI. desired to mediate between the counterparties. The Pope and the Curia hoped to redirect imperial forces to Eastern Europe, where Turkish pressure was greatest and where there were problems related to succession in Poland . Alberizzi's attempts to mediate were not recognized by the Habsburg court, on the contrary, he was accused of being on the side of the French and could not prevent the war between the Empire and Louis XIV.

In recognition of his numerous activities, Pope Clement X elevated him to the rank of cardinal on May 27, 1675 in the consistory. On March 23 of the following year he received the cardinal's hat and the titular church of San Giovanni a Porta Latina . As a member of various congregations he was Bishop of Tivoli from June 22, 1676 , but renounced the diocese on September 4, 1679. He took part in the conclave of 1676 , in which Pope Innocent XI. was chosen.

Mario Alberizzi died on September 29, 1680 at the age of 70.

Remarks

  1. Numerous sources incorrectly state that he was born in Salve, Lecce, in the diocese of Alessano. But, as demonstrated by Carlo Stasi (see bibliography), the cardinal was born in Salice, in the Archdiocese of Brindisi. The mistake was caused by Petrucci when transcribing the word "Salice" into "Salve" from the manuscript of the will.
