The Archdiocese of Gaeta ( Latin : Archidioecesis Caietana , Italian : Arcidiocesi di Gaeta ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Italy with its seat in Gaeta , Lazio , south of Rome . The patrons of the archdiocese are Saints Erasmus of Antioch and Marcian of Syracuse , celebrated on June 2nd.
territory
The territory of the archdiocese includes some parishes in the province of Latina ( Campodimele , Castelforte , Fondi , Formia , Gaeta , Itri , Lenola , Minturno , Monte San Biagio , Santi Cosma e Damiano , Sperlonga , Spigno Saturnia ), including the Pontine Islands ( Ponza and Ventotene ) and municipalities of the province of Frosinone ( Ausonia , Coreno Ausonio and Pastena ). The 57 parishes are divided into four deaneries: Fondi, Formia, Gaeta and Minturno.
history
The founding of the diocese coincides with the transfer of the diocese of Formia to Gaeta at the time of the abandonment of the city after a siege of Formia by the Saracens around 859. In the tenth century, the diocese of Gaeta with the diocese of Traetto (the old diocese of Minturno, which was founded around 590 merged with the Diocese of Formia and restored during the pontificate of Pope Leo III ).
In 1818 it was united with the dissolved diocese of Fondi after a concordat between Pope Pius VII and King of the Two Sicilies Ferdinand I. On December 31, 1848, it was elevated to the status of an archbishopric, immediately subordinate to the Holy See .
cathedral
The cathedral Santi Erasmo e Marciano e di Santa Maria Assunta by Pope Paschal II. , Consecrated Bishop Alberto on 22 January, probably in 1106 (but the year is uncertain and varies according to Ferdinando Ughelli or Lodovico Antonio Muratori or Paul Fridolin Kehr between 1099 and 1110).
