Opuntia tapona is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Opuntia tapona grows shrubby with several ascending or spreading branches and reaches heights of 0.5 to 1 meter. A short, thick and thorny trunk is often formed. The light green, somewhat glaucous , fine but densely downy, circular to broadly obovate shoot sections are 15 to 30 centimeters long and 6 to 18 centimeters wide. The reddish brown areoles are far apart and have reddish glochids up to 4 millimeters long . The one to four thin, bent back thorns are light gray to reddish and 1 to 5 centimeters long.

The bright orange-yellow flowers reach a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters. The red, fleshy fruits are 3.5 to 5 inches long and 2 to 4 inches in diameter.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia tapona is common in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur .
