Opuntioideae is a subfamily of the cactus family (Cactaceae).
description
The species of the subfamily Opuntioideae can grow prostrate, lawn-shaped, clusters to tree-shaped. Many have the characteristic of producing flattened, disc-shaped shoots, on the edge and surface of which there are thorns and glochids more or less evenly distributed .
Systematics
The subfamily Opuntioideae is divided into five tribes with the following genera:
- Tribe Austrocylindropuntieae Wallace & Dickie
- Austrocylindropuntia Backeb.
- Cumulopuntia F. Knight
- Tribe Cylindropuntieae Doweld
- Cylindropuntia (Engelm.) FMKnuth
- Grusonia F. Rchb. ex Britton & Rose
- Pereskiopsis Britton & Rose
- Quiabentia Britton & Rose
- Tribus Opuntieae Salm-Dyck
- Brasiliopuntia (K.Schum.) A.Berger
- Consolea Lem.
- Miqueliopuntia Frič ex F. Ritter
- Opuntia Mill.
- Tacinga Britton & Rose
- Tunilla D.R. Hunt & Iliff
- Tribe Pterocacteae Doweld
- Pterocactus K.Schum.
- Tribe Tephrocacteae Doweld
- Maihueniopsis Speg.
- Tephrocactus Lem.
The differences to the systematics established by Wolfgang Stuppy in 2002 are the non-recognition of Nopalea as an independent genus and the division of the genus Grusonia into four sub-genera.
