Pereskiopsis is a genus of plants from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek noun "ὅψις" (opsis) for appearance and refers to the similarity with the plants of the genus Pereskia .

description

The frequently climbing or climbing species of the genus Pereskiopsis grow shrubby or tree-like with several irregular branches and sometimes have well-developed trunks. The shoots, which are round in cross-section, are not articulated. Their flat and fleshy, usually permanent leaves are elliptical, egg-shaped, spatula-shaped or almost round. The round areoles are hairy and usually have glochids . One or more needle-like thorns are usually present. The pericarpel is covered with leaves, scales and glochids, a flower tube is missing.

The flowers are similar to those of the Opuntia and arise laterally from the shoots of the previous year, but sometimes also from the tip of the shoot. They open during the day and are yellow to pink to red. The club-shaped, fleshy fruits do not tear and are often covered with glochids. They are red or orange, sometimes juicy and contain a few, broadly egg-shaped, whitish-yellowish seeds 4 to 5 millimeters in length.

Systematics and distribution

The range of the species of the genus Pereskiopsis extends from Mexico south to Guatemala .

In 1907 Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose established the new genus Pereskiopsis for some species of the genera Opuntia and Pereskia . The type species of the genus is Opuntia porteri . The genus includes the following species:
