Pereskiopsis diguetii is a species of plant in the genus Pereskiopsis from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Spanish common names are "Alfilerillo", "Cola de Diablo", "Nopaleta" and "Patolón".

description

Pereskiopsis diguetii grows densely shrubby , branched at the base and reaches heights of 1 to 2 meters. The trunk is barely developed. The finely downy, reddish green shoots have a diameter of 4 to 8 millimeters. The elliptical to egg-shaped leaf blade of the leaves is pointed at the tip and wedge-shaped at the base. It is 2 to 6 inches long and 1.5 to 3 inches wide. The whitish areoles are covered with glochids , wool, some hairs and a few thorns . The glochids are up to 0.2 millimeters in size. There are one to five thorns on the shoots, they are more numerous on the trunk. The straight, ascending thorns are almost black and turn grayish with age. They are 2 to 7 inches long.

The yellow flowers reach a diameter of 3.2 to 4.5 centimeters and are 3 to 7.5 centimeters long. Her fluffy pericarpellet is provided with bracts. The top-shaped to obovate, orange to yellow and sometimes red-turning fruits are downy. They have a diameter of 1 to 1.6 centimeters, are 2.5 to 7 millimeters long and are covered with plenty of glochids.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pereskiopsis diguetii is widespread in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur up to an altitude of 1,800 meters.

It was first described as Opuntia diguetii in 1898 by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in 1907 in the genus Pereskiopsis, which they newly established .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
