The Tour de France 1912 took place from June 30th to July 28th. The stage locations were exactly the same as the year before; however, the route was a few kilometers shorter. For the last time, the winner was determined using a points system. Of 131 riders who started, only 41 finished the tour.
Race course
Lucien Petit-Breton , one of the favorites in the run-up to the tour, collided with a runaway cow on the second stage near Armentières and had to give up the race. The Belgian champion Odiel Defraeye already took the lead in the overall classification after the third stage and did not give it up until the end. Although could Eugène Christophe initially reduce the backlog thanks to three stage wins, but this was distancing critical of Defraeye in the first stage in the Pyrenees. On the same day, co-favorite Octave Lapize gave up the race, his teammates no longer competed. So the first tour victory by a Belgian was ultimately safe.
A technical innovation was the first use of the freewheel . Tour director Henri Desgrange , however, banned its use on some stages. In his opinion, the riders did not cover the effective distance because they were no longer forced to pedal constantly.
