The 14th Tour de France took place with 15 stages from June 27 to July 25, 1920. 113 drivers took part in the tour, but only 22 made it to the finish.
Race course
The tour started in the Paris suburb of Argenteuil , the destination was the Parisian Parc des Princes . The route took the participants first to the west, then to the Pyrenees , to the French Mediterranean coast and over the Alps to Paris.
The Belgian Philippe Thys was able to prevail as the favorite and win his third Tour de France. For the 5503 km, Thys achieved an average of 24.132 km / h. He was also able to benefit from the fact that numerous competitors for victory, including Eugène Christophe , Jean Alavoine and the brothers Henri and Francis Pélissier , gave up prematurely.
Tour guide Henri Desgrange accused Henri Pélissier of not being capable of suffering enough. The French Honoré Barthélémy suffered a broken shoulder in a fall, but still drove the tour to the end. He finished eighth in the overall standings and was therefore the best French, and the first to seventh places were occupied by Belgians.
For the first time, some stages of the tour were decided in a sprint.
