The 53rd Tour de France took place from June 21 to July 14, 1966 and covered 22 stages over 4,303 km. Again, Frenchman Raymond Poulidor , who started as the favorite, was unable to prevail. 130 racers took part in the tour, of which 82 were classified.
Race course
The German Rudi Altig won the first stage with a 47-second lead and took over the yellow jersey that he could defend up to the foot of the Pyrenees. Altig achieved another victory during the 12th stage to Revel . On this stage, the Cologne-based Karl-Heinz Kunde took over the overall lead and was able to drive in yellow for five days. At the end of the tour, Kunde achieved his only top 10 position in the overall ranking of the Tour de France with 9th place. Rudi Altig won the overall ranking of the most combative driver .
After his victory in the second time trial in Vals-les-Bains, Raymond Poulidor could hope for overall victory, after all, he had beaten the strong time trial driver Jacques Anquetil for the first time in his special discipline. But after the time trial, Poulidor was already almost five minutes behind the Dutchman Jan Janssen and the largely unknown Frenchman Lucien Aimar .
On the first difficult stage in the Alps to Briançon , the Spaniard Julio Jiménez won , who at the end of the tour also won the mountain classification. The favorites Anquetil and Poulidor eyed each other and drove to the finish at the same time, just like the next day on the stage to Turin . On this stage, Aimar had a sufficient lead over the two French and Dutch Janssen that he could not be overtaken until Paris.
Poulidor realized the danger posed by his compatriot too late, he could only reduce his deficit and finished third overall. With Janssen in second place on the tour, a Dutchman stood on the podium for the first time. Anquetil got out on the 19th stage of his last tour participation weakened by an illness. He was still able to contribute to the victory of his team, because Poulidor was distracted by him when Anquetil's teammate Aimar drove the decisive minutes out on Poulidor.
In Bordeaux , the drivers went on strike after an unannounced doping test by the French judiciary. The drivers stopped five kilometers after the start and Rik Van Looy , as the driver's spokesman, demanded that no more nighttime checks be carried out. When controls took place again on the 13th stage, six drivers tested positive.
