Roger Pingeon (born August 28, 1940 in Hauteville , † March 19, 2017 in Beaupont ) was a French cyclist .
Athletic career
Roger Pingeon completed an apprenticeship as a plumber . During his training he came into contact with cycling and initially competed successfully in amateur races . His cycling career was interrupted by military service, which he spent mainly in Algeria . In 1964 he finished second at Polymultipliée lyonnaise in the amateurs race and won the open race the next day, in which professionals also took part. He was then signed by the Peugeot team around the eventual world champion Tom Simpson .
Roger Pingeon was a professional cyclist until 1974. In his first year as a professional, 1965, he was twelfth overall in the Tour de France . In the following year, however, he wanted to retire from cycling because he had to give up in quick succession at Paris-Nice and at the Critérium du Dauphiné , but he was persuaded by sports colleagues to continue.
In 1967 Pingeon won the Tour de France; the win was overshadowed by the death of his teammate Tom Simpson . In total, Pingeon started seven times on this tour . In 1966 he finished eighth, 1968 fifth, 1969 second and 1974 eleventh. He also won a total of four stages. In 1969 he won the Tour of Spain and won two stages. In the last few years of his sporting career, he has struggled with health problems.
Pingeon later commented on the Tour de France for Swiss television . His brother is the former cyclist René Pingeon . During Roger Pingeon's victory at the Vuelta in 1969, he was his teammate. The L'Héraultaise Cyclosportive Roger Pingeon race for everyone is held annually in the Hérault department . Roger Pingeon died on the night of March 18-19, 2017 at the age of 76.
