The red number on the back is an award given in the Tour de France road bike race . It is awarded to the most aggressive driver in the entire field for his fighting spirit and sporting spirit (French: “Prix de la combativité du Tour de France”).

The rating was introduced in 1959 . During the tour, the drivers were able to collect points which, added together, resulted in the winner of this classification. However, during the stages it was not clear who was in the lead in the ranking list for the award for the “price for the most combative driver”. In addition, the prize was not awarded several times before the 1980 tour , since then annually.

The mode was changed in 2003: since the 2003 Tour , the most combative rider of the previous day with the red number has started the new stage every morning .

On the 9th stage of the 2011 Tour de France , two riders, Johnny Hoogerland and Juan Antonio Flecha, were given the red number after they fell from an escort vehicle. After the 16th stage of the 2016 Tour de France , Julian Alaphilippe and Tony Martin were jointly awarded the red number . The two drivers from the Etixx-Quick Step team led the race over 170 kilometers.

The award is the only one on the tour that is determined by an expert jury. The jury , consisting of eight members (including athletes, race directors and journalists), decides after each stage which driver has shown the best fighting spirit. The prize will be presented to the driver on the official podium after the stage. At the end of the tour, the jury will determine the most combative driver of the entire tour in Paris .

Record winners in this category are Bernard Hinault , Eddy Merckx and Richard Virusque with three wins each. The only German winner so far was Rudi Altig (1966), the only winner from Switzerland was Serge Demierre (1983).
