Chris Anker Sørensen (born September 5, 1984 in Hammel , † September 18, 2021 in Bruges , Belgium ) was a Danish cyclist . He excelled above all as a mountain rider and won a stage at the Giro d'Italia 2010 .
Career
Chris Anker Sørensen received his first contract with an international cycling team in 2005 with the Danish Continental Team Designa Køkken . In his first year there he won one stage at the Ringerike Grand Prix and one at the Tour de Horsens . At the end of the year he then drove for Team CSC as a stagiaire . After another year at Designa Køkken, he received a regular contract with ProTeam CSC in 2007 .
With CSC he won the second stage of the 2007 Germany Tour, which was held as a team time trial, and finally came in sixth in the overall standings. In the autumn of the same year he played his first Grand Tour , the Vuelta a España, and finished the tour in 19th place. After his first participation in the Giro d'Italia in 2008, the Dane then won the penultimate stage at the Dauphiné Libéré and at the Tour of Austria the second stage. On the latter tour he was also wearing the yellow jersey for one day and took fourth place in the overall standings.
In the 2009 season Sørensen denied his first Tour de France , which he finished in 34th place, and won the Japan Cup . At the Giro d'Italia 2010 he achieved his greatest success up to then when he won the mountain finish of the 8th stage in Terminillo . Sørensen was also lined up by his team for the Tour de France 2010 , 2011 and 2012 . In 2012, he achieved his best placement in 14th place. In that year he was also awarded the red shirt number as the most combative driver . At the Vuelta a España 2011 he was twelfth, his best result in a Grand Tour, and in 2013 18th. At the Tour de Romandie 2011 and the Tour of Catalonia 2012 , he won the mountain classification . In 2015 Sørensen became Danish road champion.
After the 2015 season, he left his team , now known as Team Tinkoff , after nine years and took part in a Grand Tour for Fortuneo-Vital Concept in the Tour de France for the twelfth and final time in 2016 . In 2017 and 2018 he started for the Riwal CeramicSpeed Cycling Team and then ended his active cycling career.
On September 18, 2021, Sørensen was a commentator for the Danish broadcaster TV 2 at the UCI Road World Championships 2021 in Belgium. After being hit by a car while on a bicycle tour, he succumbed to serious injuries shortly afterwards at the age of 37.
