The 91st Giro d'Italia took place from May 10th to June 1st, 2008. The bike race was held in 21 stages with a total length of 3398.3 km.

Routing

Route of the Giro d'Italia 2008

The three-week tour began in Palermo on the island of Sicily, where a team time trial took place. This was followed by two more stages on the island. The Giro last started in 1986 in Palermo. There were four time trials (two individual time trials, one team time trial and one mountain time trial), and there were also four mountain arrivals. The tour traditionally ended in Milan .

Jens Voigt criticized the route and organization on the fringes of the mountain time trial (16th stage) : The cyclists were not able to drive from the finish point of the mountain time trial into the valley, the transfers between the stages were too long and it wouldn't taken action when drivers let themselves be pulled by the support vehicles. Further criticism came from the team boss of the Gerolsteiner team , Hans-Michael Holczer , who criticized the difficulty of the course.

Deletion from the UCI ProTour

The organizer of the Giros, RCS Sports , was one of three race organizers who were in conflict with the UCI . Since the UCI ProTour was founded in 2005, the Giro has been an integral part, as have the RCS Sports classic Milan – San Remo and Lombardy Tour and the Tirreno – Adriatico stage race . In 2008, RCS Sports deleted these races from the UCI ProTour 2008 calendar . The Giro formed the “historical calendar” with five other races. The UCI and the organizers agreed on this. Therefore in the Giro dÍtalia 2008 there are no points for the UCI ProTour 2008.

Invited teams

A memorial welcomes the Giro d'Italia
on May 18, 2008 in Castiglione della Pescaia

16 UCI ProTeams and 6 Professional Continental Teams were invited to the Giro d'Italia 2008. The two French ProTeams Bouygues Télécom and Crédit Agricole and the Italian Professional Continental Team Acqua & Sapone-Caffè Mokambo (last year with two stage wins by Stefano Garzelli) did not receive an invitation. Team High Road and Astana were only invited afterwards .

According to race director Angelo Zomegnan , there were four basic criteria for the invitation: ethics, quality, internationality and long-term relationship with the host RCS Sports . The Professional Continental Teams invited were Team Barloworld , CSF Group-Navigare , LPR (with last year's winner Danilo Di Luca ), Diquigiovanni-Androni (with Gilberto Simoni ), Slipstream-Chipotle and Tinkoff Credit Systems .

Class driver

In addition to last year's winner Danilo Di Luca (LPR), two other former giro winners took part: Di Lucas team-mate Paolo Savoldelli ( 2002 and 2005 ) and Diquigiovanni-Androni's captain Gilberto Simoni ( 2001 and 2003 ). All three drivers start for a Professional Continental Team. The Astana team, which was invited later, nominated three strong stage riders: Alberto Contador , Levi Leipheimer and Andreas Klöden . The two-time Vuelta winner Denis Menchov from Rabobank contests his first Giro.

The extended circle of favorites included José Rujano (third in 2005 ), Vladimir Karpets - both Caisse d'Epargne. The young Italian Riccardo Riccò (24 years, sixth last year) relies on the support of the winner of the Maglia Verde ( mountain classification ) 2007 Leonardo Piepoli. Also the best climber of the Tour de France 2007 , Mauricio Soler (Barloworld) is at the start.

The sprinters

Alessandro Petacchi - winner of 24 Giro stages - cannot contest the Giro due to his doping ban. His team Milram now relies entirely on Erik Zabel in the mass sprint . Other successful sprinters are at the start: Robbie McEwen , Daniele Bennati , Danilo Hondo , Paolo Bettini and Robert Förster . The young Briton Mark Cavendish underlined his good form with three sprint wins in April. Not to be underestimated are Mirco Lorenzetto , Graeme Brown , Alexandre Usov , Koldo Fernández , Luciano Pagliarini and Alberto Loddo .

All teams and drivers

197 drivers participated, including 53 Italians. The youngest participant was the Belgian Kevin Seeldrayers from Quick · Step (21 years), the oldest was Fabio Baldato (39 years) from Lampre.

Race course

8th stage: World champion Paolo Bettini ( Quick · Step ) performs team services for the wearer of the pink jersey Giovanni Visconti .

The winner of the Tour de France 2007 Alberto Contador from Team Astana , mastered the Giro d'Italia 2008 the fastest with an average speed of 38.044 km / h. Riccardo Riccò (Saunier Duval-Scott) finished second, 1:57 minutes behind. Third place went to Marzio Bruseghin , just two seconds ahead of Franco Pellizotti .

The basis for Contador's success were his good results in the time trial. In the fight against the clock, he finished second in Urbino (10th stage), fourth on the Kronplatz (16th stage) and on the last stage, the individual time trial to Milan, he was able to achieve the tiny lead of four seconds to almost two minutes to expand.

doping

On May 9, 2008, one day before the start of the Giro d'Italia, it was announced that Maximiliano Richeze had tested positive for anabolic steroids at the Circuit de la Sarthe , whereupon he was excluded from the Giro. His team CSF Group-Navigare then contested the tour with just eight drivers.

On May 21, 2008 Andrea Moletta was taken out of the Giro by his team, the Gerolsteiner team , because the driver's father was checked and questioned by the Guardia di Finanza , which is responsible for doping in Italy, during a doping campaign .

As it became known on May 29, 2008, Team Milram took its driver Igor Astarloa out of the race after the second stage, not because of fever and stomach problems, but because of suspected doping. The alleged doping was not committed during the Giro d'Italia.

Jerseys in the course of the tour

There are numerous ratings at the Giro d'Italia. To identify the leader in each case, special jerseys were approved for four ratings. The table shows the wearer of the respective jersey during the individual stage or the leaders of the respective overall ranking on the evening of the previous day.
