Pizzo is an Italian commune in the province of Vibo Valentia in the Calabria region with 9,268 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Pizzo is located in the southern part of the Gulf of Sant'Eufemia on a steep cliff mountain, 44  m slm . The place is a tourist resort and a center of fishing, especially of tuna .

history

Pizzo was founded in Greek times. After the founder "Nepeto", the residents are still called "Napetini". In the 15th century Ferdinand I had a castle built, the Castello Aragonese , which houses a museum.

In 1815 Napoleon's brother-in-law , Joachim Murat , who was King of Naples at the time, was shot on October 13th after five days of imprisonment, which ended the French rule over southern Italy.

Attractions

  • In the center is the church of San Giorgio, which was built in 1632, in which Joachim Murat is buried.
  • The Chiesetta di Piedigrotta is a cave sanctuary in the tuff rock . According to legend, at the end of the 17th century, Neapolitan castaways donated an altar to thank them for their salvation. Around 1900, the grotto was carved out of the tuff by Angelo and Alfonso Barone with biblical figures.
