Nicotera is an Italian city in the province of Vibo Valentia in Calabria with 6,158 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Nicotera is located 27 km southwest of Vibo Valentia . The neighboring municipalities are Candidoni ( RC ), Joppolo , Limbadi , Rosarno (RC) and Spilinga . The districts are Comèrconi, Marina, Preìtoni and Badia di Nicotera. Nicotera Marina has been developing as a seaside resort since the 17th century. Nicotera is the bishopric.

history

Paolo Orsi proved in 1927 that the place was the port ( Emporion ) of Medma . This port played a role from the 3rd century BC. Until the Roman period.

Attractions

The castle is worth seeing. The cathedral originally dates from the Middle Ages, but was rebuilt in 1785. There is a Roman granite quarry with unfinished pillars near the train station. The Museo Civico Archeologico is in the village with exhibits from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

The weekly or grocer's market takes place on Sundays in the upper part of Nicotera.
