Zungri is an Italian city in the province of Vibo Valentia in Calabria with 1946 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Zungri is located 20 km southwest of Vibo Valentia and about 5 km from the sea. The village is located at 571 m above sea level on the north side of the Poro plateau and covers an area of around 24 km², with a population of 2229 Zungresi . The first known written record dates back to 1310. The neighboring communities are Briatico , Cessaniti , Drapia , Filandari , Rombiolo , Spilinga and Zaccanopoli .
Attractions
There are still traces of medieval settlements in the municipality. These are cave dwellings that were carved directly into the tuff rock on which today's town extends. The dwellings, some of which have several rooms, date from the 12th to 14th centuries. They served the population of that time as a shelter from the attacks of the Saracens from the beginning of the 12th century.
