Christian Pfannberger (* 9. December 1979 in Judenburg ) is a former Austrian pro - cyclist , who due to repeated doping was banned for life in 2009.
Athletic career
Christian Pfannberger began his professional career in 2001 with the German team Nürnberger , after becoming military world champion in 1999. In 2003 he switched to the Austrian team Volksbank-Ideal and from 2004 drove for the Czech team Ed 'System ZVVZ . In the same year he took second place at the Austrian state championships in road singles.
In September 2004 Pfannberger was convicted of doping with testosterone and banned for two years. After his suspension he resumed his career with the Austrian team Elk Haus-Simplon , for which he also played the 2007 season.
The native of Styria suffered a broken collarbone and a chipped bone in his wrist when he fell on May 1st, 2007 in the area around the Henninger Tower . He intervened again at the Austrian time trial championships on June 28th and came third in Podersdorf , three days later he secured the Austrian state championship on the road. On the 59th Tour of Austria , he entered the annals of this tour as the 20th Austrian Glockner King , he covered the 13 km from the Ferleiten toll station (1151 m) to Fuschertörl (2429 m) in 47:20 minutes, marking one new record time, which Gerrit Glomser had already beaten by two seconds in 2008 .
For 2008 he signed a one-year contract with the Italian-English team Barloworld . At his first highlight of the season, the Ardennes classics in spring, he was able to place in the top ten. In particular, he achieved a fifth place in Liège-Bastogne-Liège , which is one of the monuments of cycling . In the fall of the season he built up his form again, especially with a view to the World Cup in Varese, Italy . In the run-up to the world championship, he was able to achieve top ten and podium places, mostly in the Italian autumn classics. At the world championships himself, he was able to achieve eighth place in the road race.
On May 6, 2009 it was announced that Pfannberger had tested positive for EPO during a training check on March 19, 2009 . He was then suspended from his team and banned for life as a repeat offender by the decision of the Austrian National Anti-Doping Agency on November 21, 2009 with effect from March 19, 2009. All results achieved after March 19, 2009 were withdrawn from him.
