The American Tom Danielson from the Discovery Channel team was able to win the tour after he was able to distance the Austrian Christian Pfannberger from the Elk Haus-Simplon team in the time trial on the penultimate stage . Pfannberger's compatriot and team mate Thomas Rohrgger won the mountain classification, Florian Stalder from the Phonak Cycling Team won the sprint classification. The points evaluation went to the two-time Italian stage winner Danilo Napolitano from the Lampre-Fondital team . The Irish team Tenax Salmilano won the team competition .

In the course of the investigation into the case of the American Lance Armstrong , the winner of the tour, Danielson, confessed to having doped with Epo, growth hormones, testosterone, cortisone and autologous blood transfusions in 2005 and 2006. Thereupon the title of the tour winner was revoked.
