It was only after 85 km that some drivers were able to break away, but they were soon asked again. Shortly thereafter, Grischa Janorschke ( Vorarlberg ), Lukas Pöstlberger ( Tyrol ) and Johann van Zyl ( MTN-Qhubeka ) formed a breakaway group that quickly came to over 2 minutes ahead. Shortly before Lienz there was a mass crash with 40 drivers in the main field. Since the entire medical team was needed, the field had to be neutralized and then even stopped. After this short break, the leaders were allowed to start again with their lead. A few kilometers from the finish, Van Zyl was able to pull away and win the race. The others in the leading group were overtaken by the field. The other places went to David Tanner ( IAM ) and Rick Zabel ( BMC ).
