Johnny Hoogerland (born May 13, 1983 in Yerseke ) is a former Dutch cyclist .

Athletic career

In 2001, Johnny Hoogerland won the junior competition of the Ronde van Vlaanderen . In 2003, he came to the farm team of professional team Quickstep-Davitamon , where he finished third in the road one day race Paris-Tours occupied for U23 riders. The next year he moved to Van Hemert-Eurogifts . In his second season there he was second in the U23 class in the Paris-Roubaix cycle race and third in the road race of the Dutch championship. In 2006 he switched to Jartazi-7Mobile , where he won the Grote Prijs Briek Schotte . Hoogerland has been driving for the Dutch Continental Team Van Vliet-EBH-Advocaten since 2007 (2008: Van Vliet-EBH Elshof ). In his first year there, he won a stage in the Tour of Slovakia and was eighth overall. From 2009 to 2013 he was under contract with Vacansoleil.

Hoogerland contested his first Tour de France in 2011 and took the lead in the mountain classification five times . During the 9th stage of the 2011 Tour de France , he was awarded the prize for the most combative driver (alongside Juan Antonio Flecha ). They were both in the top group when they were brought down by an escort vehicle from France Télévisions . Hoogerland fell into a barbed wire fence . Both of them reached the stage goal seriously injured, long behind, and Hoogerland had to be sewn with 33 stitches. In the following year, Hoogerland sued the production company Euro Média , because despite an out-of-court negotiation, no amicable agreement could initially be reached because of compensation for pain and suffering. The driver claims to have suffered from back pain, mood swings and insomnia for a year after the accident. In November 2014 he received compensation from the insurance company.

At the beginning of February 2013, Hoogerland was hit again by a car and seriously injured while training on the Spanish Costa Blanca . In the same season he became Dutch road racing champion.

In 2014 he drove for the Italian team Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela . After he complained on New Year's Eve 2014 via Twitter about what he saw as outstanding salary payments, his former employer sued him in January 2015 for defamation and defamation .

In 2016 Johnny Hoogerland ended his cycling career, but was still working as an ambassadeur for his last team, the Roompot Oranje Peloton . In 2017 it became known that he and his wife had bought a pension in Austria and were moving to Carinthia .

In 2019 he won his first beach race at the Katwijk Fietst Strandrace.
