Marinus Valentijn was a professional racing driver from 1931 to 1939. During this time he was twice Dutch road champion. His greatest success was a third place at the road world championships in 1933 behind Georges Speicher and Antonin Magne , after he had already finished sixth in 1932.
Valentijn was considered a pioneer because he was one of the first Dutch people to start abroad. So he took part in the first Vuelta a España in 1935 and finished tenth. At that time, for moral reasons, cycling races were only allowed as closed circuit races in the Netherlands.
Marinus Valentijn was the grandfather of the Dutch racing driver Jacques Hanegraaf .
