Niki Terpstra (born May 18, 1984 in Beverwijk ) is a Dutch cyclist .
Career
Niki Terpstra initially concentrated mainly on track cycling . At the UCI Track World Championships in Los Angeles in 2005 , he won the silver medal in the team pursuit together with Levi Heimans , Jens Mouris and Peter Schep . Overall, Terpstra was eight times Dutch national champion on the track from 2004 to 2007.
After he was on the street u. a. In 2006 he won a stage of the Tour of Belgium in 2006 , and in the 2007 season he received his first contract with a UCI ProTeam , the German team Milram . In his first year, he won the Germany Tour 2007 mountain classification for this team .
At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , it was supposed to be used in the Dutch four-four. But on the way from the Olympic Village to the Laoshan Velodrome, he had an unfortunate fall after his teammate Robert Slippens had to avoid a car. In the fall, he broke both forearms.
2010 Niki Terpstra was the first Dutch road champion. He was able to repeat this success in 2012 and 2015. In 2011 Terpstra moved to the Belgian team Quick-Step , with whom he became world champion in team time trial in 2012 , 2013 and 2016 . His greatest success to date was winning the classic Paris – Roubaix 2014, which he secured with a solo attack from a leading group of favorites six kilometers from the finish. In 2014 and 2015, Terpstra won the Tour of Qatar .
On the last stage of the Eneco Tour 2014, Terpstra was disqualified because of an elbow hit against Maarten Wijnants and thus lost his seventh place in the overall standings. He then apologized for his behavior.
In 2016 Terpstra won the overall ranking of the Eneco Tour and thus his first stage race of the UCI WorldTour . Two years later, after a long solo journey, he won the World Tour one-day race E3 Harelbeke and the Tour of Flanders, his second monument to cycling . This made him the first Dutchman since Adrie van der Poel in 1986 to win the Tour of Flanders.
In 2019 Terpstra moved to the French team Total Direct Énergie . While participating in the Tour of Flanders, Terpstra fell and suffered a severe concussion , so that he was canceled for further races in the spring. On the 11th stage of the 2019 Tour de France , he fell again and broke his shoulder blade.
Honors
In 2012 Niki Terpstra was awarded the Gerrit Schulte Trofee as “Cyclist of the Year” in the Netherlands. However, he did not take the trophy personally and criticized the election process in advance. It is unclear how the nominations by the Club 48 would come about. It is incomprehensible to him that Lars Boom and Lieuwe Westra are not nominated despite their successes. In 2014, Terpstra complained that he himself had not been elected despite his victory at Paris-Roubaix .
