The 100th Tour of Flanders 2016 was the 100th edition of this cycling classic and took place on April 3, 2016. The race was held on a Sunday, a week before the classic Paris – Roubaix . The one-day race is part of the UCI WorldTour 2016 .

After 255 km, the reigning road world champion Peter Sagan ( Slovakia ) won in Oudenarde after a 13 km solo journey ahead of the three-time winner Fabian Cancellara ( Switzerland ) and the Belgian Sep Vanmarcke .

route

As in previous years, the race was held according to the concept newly developed five years ago with a shortened route at the beginning and a circuit to be driven three times at the end. Two of the most difficult climbs, the Oude Kwaremont and the Paterberg, were waiting for the drivers here. After 255 km the race ended in Oudenarde in the Minderbroederstraat.

Favorites

Among the most promising favorites were  the reigning world champion Peter Sagan, the Swiss Fabian Cancellara and last year's winner Alexander Kristoff ( Norway ) - especially after his second place at the E3 Prize Harelbeke and his victory at Gent – Wevelgem .

In the run-up to the event, the duel between Sagan and Cancellara and the duel between Cancellara and Belgian Tom Boonen were hyped up in the media . Boonen's Etixx Quick Step team was under considerable pressure to succeed after the team had recently failed to achieve any podium positions in the previous races in Flanders. However, the question was whether Boonen would be able to build on his earlier successes or whether it would not be better to give priority to the Czech Štybar or the Dutch Niki Terpstra .

Other serious competitors after their appearance in the previous classic season were the Belgian Sep Vanmarcke and last year's third and this year's Omloop Het Nieuwsblad winner Greg Van Avermaet . After his victory at E3 Harelbeke, the 2014 world champion , Michał Kwiatkowski from Poland, was definitely one of the favorites.

Race course

The race started quickly with numerous attacks after the end of neutralization. Towards the middle of the race, a 7-man leading group formed, which was able to keep a lead of two to three minutes relatively constant for a longer period of time. After this group shrank more and more and the gap to the peloton narrowed to well under a minute, the first attacks from the field began, in which riders also took part, who had a prospect of leading positions.

The decisive attack was finally initiated by Kwiatkowsky, Sagan and Vanmarcke about 33 km from the finish. After meeting the remaining riders from the original leading group, Sagan and Vanmarcke finally broke away from their rivals on the last driveway to Oude Kwaremont. Kwiatkowski could no longer follow them either.

At the same time, with a vehement increase in pace, Fabian Cancellara broke away from the remaining main group with all other serious opponents. But he could not close the gap to the two front runners at Kwaremont. When Sagan shook off his companion Vanmarcke on the Paterberg, he merged with Cancellara, who was advancing from behind, and they jointly pursued Sagan.

After the gap between Sagan and his two pursuers fluctuated between 15 and 20 seconds, he was able to stabilize his lead at around 25 seconds over the last six kilometers and win the race in a sovereign solo drive. Cancellara achieved second place ahead of the exhausted Vanmarcke, which he could not be happy about at first.
