The 51st edition of the Tirreno – Adriatico road bike race was held from March 9th to 15th, 2016 and traditionally leads from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Adriatic Sea . The stage race was part of the UCI WorldTour 2016 and within this the third race after the Tour Down Under and Paris – Nice , which coincided with Tirreno – Adriatico. The total distance of the race was 1,019.8 kilometers.
Greg Van Avermaet ( BMC ) won the race by just one second over Peter Sagan ( Tinkoff ) . Third place went to the Luxembourg Bob Jungels ( Etixx-Quick Step ) , 23 seconds behind.
Teams
The 18 UCI WorldTeams were automatically entitled to start . In addition, five UCI Professional Continental Teams were invited by the organizer .
Stages
The fifth stage was canceled due to snowfall . The queen's stage should have crossed the Apennines and ended with a mountain arrival on Monte San Vicino at an altitude of 1208 m , a mountain of the first category. Before that, mountain ratings were planned in Valico del Soglio (833 m altitude / category 2), in Frontignano (1210 m / category 1), in Le Arette (1113 m / category 1) and in Montelago (1017 m / category 1).
