Stephen Phillip "Steve" Cummings (born March 19, 1981 in Wirral ) is a former British cyclist . After being a successful pursuer in track cycling , he developed into a successful all-rounder on the road .
Career
Steve Cummings was initially mainly active on the track. At the Olympic Games in Athens he won the silver medal in the team pursuit along with Bradley Wiggins , Rob Hayles and Paul Manning . A year later they managed to achieve the world title. At the Commonwealth Games 2006 he was again first with the team. In the single pursuit , he secured the bronze medal. Later at the World Cup in Bordeaux, the team finished second behind Australia.
On the road, Cummings first joined an international cycling team in 2005 , the Belgian Professional Continental Team Landbouwkrediet-Colnago . At the 2006 Commonwealth Games , he was narrowly beaten fourth. He received his first contract with a ProTeam in 2007 with Discovery Channel .
After winning the 13th stage of the Vuelta a España in 2012 , he achieved his greatest road success to date on the 14th stage of the 2015 Tour de France after Mende , after which he shortly ahead of the French Thibaut Pinot and Romain Bardet, who led the last climb overtook the target. He benefited from a tactical hesitation on the part of the two mountain specialists. At the Tour de France 2016 he repeated this success on the mountainous Tour de France 2016/7. Stage in which he pulled away from a breakaway group 27 kilometers from the finish. In 2017, Cummings became British double champions: he won both the time trial and the road race at the British road championships.
After Cummings was out for a long time in the 2019 season due to two falls in which he suffered a broken collarbone and then a vertebral fracture, he did not receive a follow-up contract from his team and ended his active career at the age of 38. During his career, Cummings made and completed 13 Grand Tours .
